Pounds to kilograms is the one people come for. The rest of the table is underneath, including stones and both kinds of ton.
How the math works
Everything converts through the ounce: value x (ounces per the unit you have) / (ounces per the unit you want). The anchor is exact: 1 pound is 0.45359237 kilograms. A pound is 16 ounces, a stone 14 pounds, and a US ton 2,000 pounds against a metric ton of 1,000 kilograms.
Common questions
- How many pounds are in a kilogram?
- About 2.20462 pounds. For mental arithmetic, double it and add ten percent: 70 kg becomes 140 plus 14, or 154 pounds, against a true 154.3.
- What is the difference between a US ton and a metric ton?
- A US or short ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kg. A metric ton is 1,000 kg, about 2,205 pounds, so it is roughly ten percent heavier. There is also a British long ton of 2,240 pounds, which this leaves out because almost nobody uses it now.
- Why do the UK and Ireland weigh people in stones?
- Custom, mostly. A stone is 14 pounds, so 12 stone is 168 pounds or 76 kg. It survives for body weight in those countries while everything else there went metric decades ago.
