Area Converter
Square feet to square meters for floors, acres to hectares for land. The trap with area units is that the conversion is the length factor squared, not the length factor.
How the math works
Everything converts through the square foot: value x (square feet per the unit you have) / (square feet per the unit you want). Area factors are the length factor squared. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 9 square feet, not 3. An acre is 43,560 sq ft and a hectare is 10,000 square meters.
Common questions
- How many square feet are in a square meter?
- About 10.764. Note that this is 3.28084 squared: because a meter is 3.28 feet, a square meter is nearly eleven square feet, which surprises people expecting something near three.
- How big is an acre?
- 43,560 square feet, which is about 209 feet square, or roughly 90 percent of an American football field without the end zones. A hectare is about 2.47 acres.
- Why is a square yard nine square feet?
- Because a square yard is three feet by three feet. Squaring a length conversion squares the factor, and forgetting this is the most common error in ordering carpet, sod or tile.
