Miles per hour to kilometers per hour for driving abroad, knots for anything on water, meters per second for physics homework.
How the math works
Everything converts through miles per hour: value x (mph per the unit you have) / (mph per the unit you want). One mile is 1.609344 km exactly, so 1 km/h is 0.621371 mph. A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is 1,852 meters.
Common questions
- What is 100 km/h in mph?
- About 62 mph. The quick estimate is to take away a third and add a little: for 100, a third off gives 67, and the true answer is 62. For most highway speeds, multiplying by 0.6 is close.
- What is a knot?
- One nautical mile per hour, which is about 1.15 mph or 1.85 km/h. A nautical mile is one minute of latitude, which is why ships and aircraft use it: it maps directly onto a chart.
- How do I convert mph to meters per second?
- Divide by 2.237. A useful anchor is that 1 m/s is a brisk walk, about 2.24 mph, and 10 m/s is roughly 22 mph, which is close to a good sprinter over 100 meters.
