Measure the lawn, add a little for the cuts around curves, and this gives you the rolls, the pallets and what it should cost.
How the math works
Area = length x width, then multiplied by the waste allowance. A standard slab of sod is 2 ft x 5 ft, so 10 square feet. Divide the area by 9 for square yards, which is how some suppliers price it.
Common questions
- How much sod is on a pallet?
- Usually 450 to 500 square feet, though some farms sell 600. It is worth asking before you order, because ordering by the pallet and being 40 feet short means paying delivery twice.
- How much extra sod should I order?
- Five percent for a plain rectangle, ten for curved beds, fifteen if the lawn has lots of shapes to cut around. Offcuts from curves cannot be reused, so they are pure waste.
- How long can sod sit on the pallet?
- A day in mild weather, less in summer heat. It heats up on the pallet and starts to die, so arrange delivery for the morning you intend to lay it.
- How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
- Between 1,500 and 3,000 pounds depending on how wet the soil is. That is beyond most trailers, which is why delivery is normally part of the price.
