How the math works
Volume = length x width x depth in feet, divided by 27 for cubic yards. Weight = cubic yards x the weight of that stone per yard, divided by 2,000 for US tons.
Common questions
- How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
- About 1.4 tons for ordinary crushed stone, which is 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. Crusher run with fines packs heavier at roughly 1.5 tons, and pea gravel is lighter at about 1.2 tons.
- How deep should gravel be for a driveway?
- Four inches is the minimum over solid ground, and six to eight inches over soft ground, usually in two layers with a coarse base under a finer top. A two inch layer is a top-up, not a driveway.
- How much area does a ton of gravel cover?
- At two inches deep a ton covers roughly 100 square feet. At four inches it covers about 50. Double the depth and you halve the coverage.
- Should I add extra for compaction?
- Yes if the gravel is being rolled or driven on. Crusher run settles by roughly 15 to 20 percent once compacted, so order that much over the loose volume for a drive or a base layer.
