How the math works
Pavers = patio area divided by the area of one paver, then multiplied by the cutting allowance. A 4 x 8 inch paver covers 32 square inches, which is 0.222 square feet, so 4.5 of them make a square foot.
Common questions
- How many 4x8 pavers are in a square foot?
- Four and a half. A 4 by 8 inch paver is 32 square inches, and a square foot is 144, so 144 divided by 32 gives 4.5.
- How much extra should I buy for cuts?
- Ten percent for a straight running bond, fifteen for herringbone or any curved edge. Buy it with the first order: pavers are made in batches and the color of a later batch rarely matches.
- How deep does the base need to be?
- Four inches of compacted crushed stone for a patio, six on soft ground, eight under a driveway. Compact in two lifts rather than one, because a single deep lift never compacts through.
- Can I lay pavers straight on sand?
- Only for a garden path that nobody minds relaying. Sand is a bedding course, not a base. Without compacted stone under it the patio settles unevenly within a season.
