Hours Calculator
How many hours between two times, with the break taken off. Type times any way you like: 9am, 9:00, 17:30 and 5:30 pm all work.
How the math works
Both times are turned into minutes since midnight and subtracted. If the end time is not after the start time, the shift is taken as crossing midnight and 24 hours are added. The unpaid break comes off the total. Decimal hours are the minutes divided by 60, which is why 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 and never 8.3.
Common questions
- How many hours is 9 to 5:30 with a 30 minute break?
- 8 hours. The clock span is 8 hours 30 minutes and the unpaid break takes off 30, which is 8.0 decimal hours on a timesheet.
- How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 is 0.33, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75. Writing 8.30 for 8 hours 30 minutes is the most common timesheet error and it underpays by 12 minutes.
- What about an overnight shift?
- Just enter it. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as crossing midnight, so 10pm to 6am comes out as 8 hours.
- Does my break have to be unpaid?
- Federal law does not require meal breaks at all, but when an employer gives one of 30 minutes or more and the employee is fully relieved of duty, it can be unpaid. Short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are generally paid. Several states add their own rules.
- When does overtime start?
- Under federal law, after 40 hours in a workweek, paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Some states, California among them, also pay overtime after 8 hours in a single day.
