How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 is 0.33, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75. Writing 8.30 for 8 hours 30 minutes is the most common timesheet error and it underpays by 12 minutes.

What about an overnight shift?

Just enter it. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as crossing midnight, so 10pm to 6am comes out as 8 hours.

Does my break have to be unpaid?

Federal law does not require meal breaks at all, but when an employer gives one of 30 minutes or more and the employee is fully relieved of duty, it can be unpaid. Short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are generally paid. Several states add their own rules.

When does overtime start?

Under federal law, after 40 hours in a workweek, paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Some states, California among them, also pay overtime after 8 hours in a single day.
