Overtime Pay Calculator
Enter your hourly rate and the hours you worked in one week. Federal law pays at least time and a half for every hour past 40, and the week stands on its own - a slow week does not cancel a long one.
How the math works
Regular pay = hours up to the threshold x your rate. Overtime pay = hours past the threshold x your rate x the overtime multiplier. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act the threshold is 40 hours in a single workweek and the multiplier is at least 1.5. These figures are gross - tax has not been taken out.
Common questions
- Is overtime worked out per week or per pay period?
- Per week. Your employer picks a fixed seven-day workweek, and each one is counted on its own. If you work 50 hours one week and 30 the next, you are owed 10 hours of overtime, even though the two weeks average 40.
- Do hours over 8 in one day count as overtime?
- Not under federal law, which only counts the week. A few states, California among them, do pay daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12. If that is your state, work out each day separately rather than using the weekly total.
- Does paid time off count toward the 40 hours?
- No. Overtime is owed on hours actually worked. A week with 32 worked hours and 8 hours of holiday pay totals 40 paid hours but no overtime, because only 32 were worked.
- Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?
- No. It is ordinary pay and is taxed at the same rates as the rest of your income. A big overtime week can push a single paycheck into a higher withholding bracket, so more is held back that week, but it evens out when you file.
- I am on salary - do I still get overtime?
- It depends on whether you are exempt. Being paid a salary is not enough on its own: the job also has to meet a duties test and clear a minimum salary level. Many salaried workers are still owed overtime. To use this page, divide your weekly salary by the hours it is meant to cover to get an hourly rate.
- How does a bonus change my overtime rate?
- A non-discretionary bonus - one promised for hitting a target - has to be spread across the hours it covers and raises your regular rate for those weeks. A true gift-style bonus does not. This page uses the hourly rate you enter, so add the bonus into that rate if it applies.
