Hourly to Salary Calculator
Turn an hourly rate into what it is worth a year. Unpaid weeks and overtime both move the answer, so both are here rather than hidden behind a flat 2,080 hours.
How the math works
Weekly pay is rate x hours, plus rate x multiplier x overtime hours. Yearly pay is weekly pay x the number of paid weeks. The familiar 2,080 figure is 40 hours x 52 weeks, which only holds if every week is paid.
Common questions
- What is 25 dollars an hour a year?
- At 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks it is 52,000 a year before tax. With two unpaid weeks it is 50,000. That is the gross figure - take-home after federal, state, Social Security and Medicare is usually 20 to 30 percent lower.
- Why is 2,080 hours the standard?
- It is 40 hours times 52 weeks. Salaried employees are paid across all 52 weeks whether they work them or not, so 2,080 is exact for them. Hourly workers without paid leave should lower the paid weeks instead.
- How do I convert a salary back to an hourly rate?
- Divide the salary by the hours you actually work in a year. On 2,080 hours, divide by 2,080: a 60,000 salary is about 28.85 an hour. If you regularly work 50 hours, divide by 2,600 instead, which gives 23.08 - the real comparison.
- Is overtime always time and a half?
- Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate beyond 40 hours in a week. Some states add daily overtime rules and some employers pay double time, so check your state and your contract.
- Does biweekly pay more than semimonthly?
- The yearly total is identical. Biweekly gives 26 smaller checks and two months a year with three of them; semimonthly gives 24 slightly larger ones on fixed dates. Only the timing differs.
