How the math works
One brick occupies its own face size plus a 3/8 inch mortar joint in each direction. A modular brick is 7 5/8 by 2 1/4 inches, so with the joint it occupies 8 by 2 5/8, which is 21 square inches. 144 divided by 21 gives 6.86 bricks per square foot of wall.

- How many bricks are in a square foot?
- Just under seven for a modular brick at a 3/8 inch joint, which is the US standard. A queen brick is about 5.8 per square foot, and a large utility brick is 3.
- How many bricks do I need for a 20 by 8 foot wall?
- About 1,150 modular bricks for a single wythe with five percent waste. Double that for a solid two-wythe wall.
- How much mortar do I need for 1,000 bricks?
- About seven 70 pound bags of premixed mortar at a 3/8 inch joint. Mixing your own takes roughly the same volume in cement, lime and mason sand.
- Should I order extra brick?
- Five percent on a straight wall, ten with corners or arches. Order it in the first load: brick is fired in batches and the color of a later batch will not match.
